I’d rolled out of my tent early – dusty and tired and distinctly unshowered – to hike along Enorama Creek in the heart of the arid, ancient Flinders Ranges. Slivers of brittle rock slid beneath my boots as I descended the steep bank to find the only golden spike in the Southern Hemisphere – just five hours north of Adelaide, South Australia. The bronze-coloured disc is in the shade of a river red gum, embedded in the rock at the conspicuous divide between slabs of purple tillite and sandy dolomite.
