TAD CE1TX

The most money I’ve ever spent on a pair of loudspeakers was back in the early 1990s, when I bought a pair of used TAD TH-4001 wooden horns and their associated TD-4001 compression drivers. The TAD horn’s smooth, microre-solved response was a refinement upgrade from my multicell Altec horns; plus, the TADs’ French-polished wood looked radically less industrial than the soldered-tin, tar-filled 1005/288C horns they replaced. None of my horn-fanatic friends had anything sonically or aesthetically comparable, and all of them were envious. I didn’t keep the TADs long, because the friend who admired them most made me a very “friendly” offer. That was my first experience with Japanese loudspeaker design, and it exposed me to a level of engineering precision and fine craftsmanship I had not yet encountered in American-made…

Before I tested one of the Dan D’Agostino M400 MxV amplifiers, serial number 5879, with my Audio Precision SYS2722,1 I preconditioned it by following the CEA’s recommendation: I ran it at one-eighth the specified power into 8 ohms for 30 minutes. At the end of that time, the side-mounted heatsinks were hot, at 106.1°F (41.2°C), and the top panel was hotter, at 110.5°F (43.7°C). After testing the amplifier at high powers, the temperature of the top panel had risen to 120.4°F/49.1°C. The M400 MxV needs to be well-ventilated. The D’Agostino’s voltage gain was 26.9dB into 8 ohms, and the amplifier preserved absolute polarity (ie, was noninverting). The specified input impedance is 1M ohm. I measured 183k ohms at 20Hz, 152k ohms at 1kHz, and 129k ohms at 20kHz. Though lower than…

Being kind

Being kind

Every day, we have countless opportunities to impact the people around us. Sometimes, we hold back due to inhibition or uncertainty around what is appropriate or how our actions will be received. However, in today’s world, being kind is more important than ever. What is kindness? Kindness involves positive action towards another, such as being friendly, generous or considerate. As well as making gestures of kindness, you might think about the impact your actions have on the people around you and make decisions for the collective good. Kindness is not limited to people. Treating animals and the earth with kindness, restraint and respect contributes to the wellbeing of our environment and community. Kindness as a trait Kindness does not need to be about “people pleasing”. You can be self-assured and kind. There is great strength…

A POLAROID THAT RECORDS SOUND?

A POLAROID THAT RECORDS SOUND?

Fujifilm introduced its latest instant camera, the instax mini LiPlay, to the South African market. The camera has the ability to record a 10 second voice note when taking a picture. The image is then printed with a QR code which can be scanned by any QR scanner app to hear the soundclip! This is a first-time feature for any polaroid-like camera, and a beautiful way to capture a special moment. The camera can also connect to any smartphone via an app and print any image on that phone. Images can also be saved on the camera itself, allowing users to choose which images to print. Up to 46 images can be stored on the device (with a slot for a microSD card for more space), the pictures can be viewed…

Finding Their Light

Finding Their Light

ALEXANDRA GRAY BENNETT and her husband were ready to nest. Finally back together in their native Minnesota—after they married, he had moved to Boston for business school—the couple were looking for an ideal home to start a family in. “We were basically Trulia regulars,” jokes Bennett. “But I remember the first moment I saw our house in 2017. I just had a feeling.” Set in the leafy Kenwood neighborhood of South Minneapolis, the 2,300-square-foot, two-and-a-half-story 1920s cedar-shingle dwelling had a traditional foursquare design, with a room in each corner and a central hall and stairway. It ticked all their boxes: It was simple and beautiful, close to lakes and trails for their Labrador, and—the kicker—walking distance from one of the city’s best playgrounds. Two years and one positive pregnancy test later,…

Holidays on Ice

Planning a holiday party doesn’t have to be complicated. The trick is to serve a pared-down but special-feeling menu. One of my favorites, which I serve at my annual open house in Bedford, is a delicious fresh-seafood buffet of oysters and shrimp, accompanied by a bar stocked with icy-cold whites, a delectable rosé, and a sparkling wine or two. As a young married woman in New York City, I experienced such a buffet at the town house of some friends before a performance of the Messiah at Carnegie Hall. It occurred to me at the time that our hostess was a genius to focus on such a limited yet tasty and refined menu. We ate our fill, then trekked to the concert sated and happy. When preparing this spread, make sure…

CREME BRULÉ

Dessert-klassikeren over dem alle står for skud.

A mindful approach to immunity

A mindful approach to immunity

To function well, the immune system requires balance in both the mind and body. The food you choose to eat, the way you move your body, your thoughts, emotions and your stress response all influence the body’s ability to fight infection, recover from illness and come back into a state of balance. Your mental state can have a profound influence on your physical health. Unfortunately, stress is a constant issue for many people due to the current pace of life. You are continuously processing information from various sources and may find yourself frequently rushing and striving to get everything done. As a result, you may not be providing your mind and body with adequate time to rest. Your body responds to overwhelming stimulus by activating the sympathetic nervous system. Stress activates your…

KAETLYN OSMOND FINDS HER HAPPY PLACE

For much of her life, her journey had a defined direction. With dreams of becoming a figure skating champion ever dancing in her head, Kaetlyn Osmond knew precisely what she needed to do to achieve the goals she had set for herself. In the final two seasons of her career, that singleminded laser focus paid off with a silver medal at the 2017 World Championships, and Olympic bronze and a World title in 2018 — the first global crown for a Canadian woman in more than four decades. And then suddenly, everything changed when Osmond closed the door on it all in 2019, calling it a career at age 23. The purpose that had been the guiding force in her life was gone and with it, much of the identity she had…

BEHIND THE BOARDS

BEHIND THE BOARDS

From the moment the flamboyant Frenchman Florent Amodio began competing on the international circuit, his expressive style and outgoing personality made him a fan favorite. Following his retirement in 2016, Amodio found his calling as a coach, and in 2018 opened his own skating academy in Vaujany, France. Amodio enjoyed a long career, winning four national titles, the 2008 Junior Grand Prix Final crown and a complete set of medals from the European Championships: Gold in his debut in 2011, bronze in 2012 and silver in 2013. He competed at five World Championships, with his best result coming in Nice, France, in 2012, where he finished fifth. His two Olympic Winter Games appearances did not yield the results he had hoped for. Amodio finished 12th in his debut in Vancouver in 2010 and…

Layout in the family room

Layout in the family room

Many of us dream of having a large model railroad in a basement or garage, with scale miles of track and long trains. But we’re often confronted with the reality of a lack of separate space to dedicate to a layout. By re-examining the space we have, it might be possible to build a layout in another part of the home that shares other family activities. It would take a tolerant spouse to agree to building a layout in the formal living room, dining room, or master bedroom. But family rooms and dens, with their ubiquitous televisions and children’s toys, are fertile ground for a model railroad. That’s exactly what I did. When I wanted to build a modern HO layout to complement my existing O scale Civil War-era layout, I…

A SIKH TRAGEDY

Despite the summer heat enveloping the walled city of Lahore in late June 1839, a chilling sense of anxiety and grief pervaded the hearts of Punjabi ministers and courtiers gathered inside the royal chambers of the imperial palace. Their master, Maharajah Ranjit Singh, lay senseless and on the verge of death in his opulent bedchamber, inside the Lahore Fort. Countless prayers were being offered for his recovery, and vast sums of alms – gold, jewels and elephants, no less – were given away from the fabulous riches of the Sikh imperial treasury, in the desperate hope of saving Ranjit Singh’s life, or at least procuring God’s mercy for his soul. The palatial apartments occupied by the ailing maharajah were originally constructed centuries before by the great Mughal emperors, but they had…

FRENCH TWIST

Handbag designer Tyler Ellis is the daughter of American fashion icon Perry Ellis and television writer and producer Barbara Gallagher, and much like her late father, she has a taste for what might best be described as modern classics—a deftly calibrated mix of simple, timeless lines and contemporary panache. The style applies not only to her own luxury creations—a staple of Hollywood’s endless red-carpet parade—but also to the chic, breezy Brentwood home she shares with her husband, investor Benjamin Shriner. Seduced by the property’s French-inflected, classical-meets-Deco architecture and its abundant Italian cypresses, the two purchased the house five years ago and called upon its original architect, William Hefner, and Ellis’s longtime interior designers, the Los Angeles–based AD100 firm The Archers, to reinvent the place to reflect the young couple’s taste…

THE SPORTS-CAR DRIVER’S OFF-ROADER

DON’T THINK OF RIVIAN as a truck company. Sure, the brand’s first production vehicle, the R1T you see here, is a four-door pickup truck. And next to launch will be the R1S, a three-row SUV based on the R1T. And then there’s the cartoonish RPV, an electric delivery van with up to 900 cubic feet of cargo space. Amazon hopes to have 100,000 of these rigs in service by 2030. Trucks, all of them. But when founder RJ Scaringe launched his company—in 2009, in his twenties, having just finished engineering school—his dream was to build a mid-engine hybrid sports car. And if you want to understand Rivian, you have to think of it as a sports-car company. The evidence sits snug on the centerline of the R1T’s chassis: four electric motors, one…

THE GAY GUIDEBOOK

A huge part of the reason we struggle so much, is that we don’t get the same guidance that straight people do from society or from the media available to us. Throughout history, film, television, and books have primarily – often exclusively – represented heterosexual coming-of-age stories and romances. These media play a huge role in how young people are socialised. Among other things, we learn about friendship, dating, and sex from the content we consume. As young gays, we constantly compared ourselves to the straight stories we saw on screen, with little to no references for how different or similar being gay might be. It also gave the impression that world is largely devoid of gay people, but if you’ve ever been to Cape Town, you know that is…

Turning “should” into self-compassion

I should exercise more. I should get up earlier. I should eat more green leafy vegetables … or maybe I should just stop saying “should”. By “should-ing,” I’m comparing myself with others, or with an idealised version of what I could be. “Should” suggests that I need to change, because who I am now isn’t good enough. Sure, occasionally “should” can be helpful. It can help us focus on our priorities. For example, if I want to complete another half-marathon this year, I’ll need to train. But telling myself I should run doesn’t always motivate me to hit the pavement. Perhaps there are better ways to encourage myself. Psychologist Patrea O’Donoghue says one of the problems with “should” is that it puts a negative slant on things. Even things we want to…

HERETIC KNIVES THE NEW KING OF SPRING

HERETIC KNIVES THE NEW KING OF SPRING

Some people are born into legacies, and all they have to do is the bare minimum to take control of an empire, while others truly earn every ounce of their soon-to-be domains. Then, there are the 1% who are born into a legacy and work nonstop to continue earning their keeps, only to walk away from it to forge a new birthright from scratch. This is exactly what TJ Marfione did to create his own company, Heretic Knives. TJ is the son of Anthony Marfione, the CEO of world-renowned Microtech Knives. Since the age of 6, TJ knew that he wanted to be a knifemaker. While his father was grinding steel, TJ would mimic him by turning over a bicycle and pretending its back wheel was a grinding stone used to…

LAGKAGER A-Z

Mia Irene Kristensen gennemgår her lagkagens elementer – lag for lag.

All That Glitters

EVERY YEAR, Kevin Sharkey devotes pretty much an entire December weekend to decorating the 14-foot tree that grazes the ceiling of his sleek New York City apartment overlooking the Hudson River. “You’d think it would take longer because the tree is so tall, but it actually goes by pretty quickly,” he says. Moreover, he enjoys every minute of it, and his efforts are fueled by the excitement of good times—and good friends—to come. There’s a thoughtful method to his yuletide madness, too. He stores his ornaments in bins organized by type, then arranges similar ones in groups before hanging them. “It’s a great exercise of all my styling muscles and instincts,” he says. “I want it to look like it’s encrusted in baubles.” And to that end, he goes for…

Jim Bridger’s Views From THE RIDGELINE

Jim Bridger’s Views From THE RIDGELINE

INTRODUCTION The following excerpt from Ridgeline, Michael Punke’s follow-up novel to The Revenant, in our humble opinion truly captures what Jim Bridger’s life on the frontier was like. To set the stage for what you’re about to read, Bridger and his cohort James Beckwourth were hired on as scouts for the U.S. Army. In 1866, with the country barely recovered from the Civil War, new war breaks out on the western frontier—a clash of cultures between a young, ambitious nation and the Native tribes who have lived on the land for centuries. Colonel Henry Carrington arrives in Wyoming’s Powder River Valley to lead the U.S. Army in defending the opening of a new road for gold miners and settlers. Carrington intends to build a fort in the middle of critical hunting…

WRECKED

Cape Town did not yet have a harbour in 1865. It was still being built. So when a hellish storm hit in mid-May, with gargantuan waves whipping Table Bay into a maelstrom, the ships anchored in the bay had two choices: stay on anchor and try to weather the storm, with the risk of being dragged onto the beach; or head into the teeth of the howling north-wester to seek refuge in deeper water. David Smith, captain of the RMS Athens – a mail and passenger ship, running between Cape Town and Southampton in England – took the second option. As evening fell, with the ship’s steam engine fired up and its last anchor busted, he set course to the north-west. The boat puttered along as it went head-to-head with the…

How to Deal With a Swollen Laptop Battery

How to Deal With a Swollen Laptop Battery

Lithium-ion batteries pack an amazing punch for their size. They’re robust enough to run our laptops for hours on a single charge, they’re at the core of the latest smartphones, and they even serve as the power plant behind cutting-edge electric vehicles such as the Tesla line. But lithium-ion batteries do have limits. Given how powerful laptops have become in the last few years, we’re relying on our machines for longer than ever. That has implications for batteries: They’re in service a lot longer, too. And sometimes, that means they show the limits of their technology. You may have had this happen to you: A laptop or phone you’ve had for years suddenly stops working, or maybe just starts showing some sign of internal physical swelling. The screen of your phone…

GHANA GET SOME

GHANA GET SOME

I really dug the authenticity of the event. It wasn’t fake, it wasn’t forced, it just naturally fell into place, from the time the sun rose till we crawled into bed. We kicked off with a little beach clean-up. The sounds of African funk on an old turntable, vinyl grain, kids dancing, the smell of chicken and fish cooking on the open fire, fruit squeezing, coconut drinking, big smiles, awesome weather. I couldn’t stop wiggling the whole day. I’m sure I got a few out-of-focus pictures! Everything just felt right. Vibrant fishing boats, dwarfed by those big cotton trees. I reckon that wave could get super-good. It’s just peaks, A-frames, like Nicaragua, coffee-coloured water; but it was pretty small and the tides were springs, so it was hectic, the kids were doing…

Jasus lalandii

In the thin dawn, a stained curtain teases its hem across my lips. A gust of wind catches the hem and flicks away sleep, out through the window to the busy street below. I am on the floor of a stranger’s lounge. Beside my head is a shoe print on a pizza slice; cigarette ends rise crooked from the cheese and salute the day’s first thought: I think I should probably leave this metropolis. Drawn by the call of a noisy cistern, I stumble towards the bathroom. On a shelf is a mangy toothbrush with the word Colgate fading from its flank. This reminds me. In an hour’s time I pitch for a considerable account. Shiakallis picks me up on the corner outside the apartment. “Your breath smells like rotting crab.” I exhale…

In the still-youthful genre of prog-metal, Dream Theater are the undisputed silverbacks. Founded 36 years ago in the fertile breeding ground of Berklee College Of Music in Boston, the line-up took the calling cards of classic prog and turned up all the dials, leading the charge for a new movement that made you both bang and scratch your head. Comprising seven extended tracks, groaning with super-technical solos and pinballing between tricky time signatures, this year’s A View From The Top Of The World album represents everything you love/hate (delete as applicable) about the genre. When did people start wearing glasses? Various ancient peoples knew of the magnifying properties of lenses. There’s fragmentary evidence that the ancient Egyptians may have used them, while the Roman emperor Nero improved his view of gladiatorial games by watching them through an emerald. By AD 1000, the Persian scholar Ibn Sahl had written a famous treatise on optics. In it he described “reading stones” – made of quartz or rock crystal, or glass spheres cut in half – which could be placed over a text to magnify it. Eyeglass technology had advanced further still by the early years of the Italian Renaissance. We know this because several writers, including Petrarch (1304-74), were describing people holding pairs of lenses over their eyes, or suspending them from the bridge of their noses. The theologian…

Gino Cariño and his wife were at their wits’ end. Four years had gone by and the Chut Cuerva dream house they should have moved into three years before was still unfinished. According to Cariño, the contractor had replaced the workers three times over. They never had more than 11 workers onsite although Cariño had requested for more. “The workers weren’t being paid. Once, the wife of the foreman got my number somehow, called me, and said, ‘Sir, we’re not being paid.’ But I was not delayed with this contract. In fact, I’ve overpaid. He still owes me money.” Cuerva, the designer, had bowed out of the project. For the first couple of years, when architects from Cuerva’s office visited the site, they informed Cariño that the contractor’s progress reports were…

What Is C-Band, and What Does It Mean for the Future of 5G?

What Is C-Band, and What Does It Mean for the Future of 5G?

A half-dozen companies are potentially ready to spend $80 billion for C-Band, a new set of airwaves that promise to fix the perilous state of American 5G, at an FCC auction. That’s a vast amount of money, and it shows how important C-Band is. But what is C-Band, and what does it mean for 5G? Do you need a C-Band phone? Is C-Band a new frequency? Should you be scared of C-Band? I can explain. RECOVERING THE SATELLITES According to wireless testing firm Rohde and Schwarz, the C-band is all frequencies between 4GHz and 8GHz. When US wireless geeks talk about C-Band, though, they’re talking about 3.7GHz to 4.2GHz—and specifically, in this case, the range from 3.7GHz to 3.98GHz. This frequency had been used for satellite TV since the 1970s, but as C-Band…

DARE TO GO BARE!

It used to be that clothing optional resorts were only for the super liberal, but times have changed and if you haven’t been to a nudist resort yet, give it a try. In SA there are but a handful of clothing optional places for gay men to visit. But, if you do, remember that its normal to be shy at first. In no time you will be relaxed and forget that you’re in the nod. And no, its not just for guys with gym-toned physiques – all shapes and sizes are welcome. And no-one will stare, laugh or point. That’s bad manners. Though they might stare if you are hung like Dirk Diggler… Being naked is a great reminder of how similar we all truly are beneath our daily attire, and…

PATRICK LEEMANS and Franky Fonteyne never tired of seeing the sites in the historic Belgian city of Bruges, where they had lived for years. But they did weary of living in one the buildings visitors sought out tirelessly with their photographic equipment. The couple occupied a storybook-like Medieval house built in the mid 1400s along one of the city’s contemplative canals. Unfortunately, though, every time a boatload of tourists passed, the residents could hear the click of cameras and see faces of strangers looking into their windows. “The city became way too touristy and we were fed up, so it was time to leave,” says Leemans, an interior designer. Today, in their home located miles outside of Bruges the couple can stand at their floor-to-ceiling windows and know that no one…

Repair a Windows install

Repair a Windows install

Not all reinstalls require a complete wipe of your hard drive. A repair or refresh installation leaves your programs, settings and files in place, and restricts itself to installing a fresh copy of your Windows files over the top of your existing copy. If your problem is linked to a corrupt file or Windows setting, the repair installation can usually fix it. All repair installs share one common characteristic: you must launch them from Windows itself. You can’t boot from your install media and repair Windows through that; you need to boot into Windows, then start the repair process from there. If you’re unable to boot into Windows, therefore, you’ll need to skip to page 72 and perform a full destructive recovery instead. Start the repair Starting a repair install varies depending on…

SAMURAI Of YOSEMITE

SAMURAI Of YOSEMITE

Seemed like a swell idea at the time. This past March, an intrepid trio of veteran backcountry trekkers gazed upon Half Dome, the granite monolith that rises majestically from California’s Yosemite National Park, and decided to ski down a steep, icy furrow that runs near its famously sheer northwest face. Never mind that their chosen route, dubbed Bushido Gully after the moral code of the samurai, is seldom used even for summer climbing ascents, and never for descents in inclement weather—too rugged, too exposed, too damn easy to slip to certain death. That’s just the sort of wintertime fun they crave. Shortly after a frigid-but-glorious sunrise, the trio’s deputized photographer, Eric Rasmussen, balances shakily on a precipitous slope with Half Dome’s lookout spot, known as the Diving Board, looming over his…

The Morristown & Erie Railway

The Morristown & Erie Railway

Today’s shortline railroads offer advantages for modelers with an interest in the contemporary scene, but who don’t care to tackle a Class 1 railroad. If the idea of running 50-year-old diesels alongside new passenger locomotives and cars appeals to you, the Morristown & Erie Railway may be the prototype you’ve been looking for. The M&E originated as the Whippany River Railroad in 1895. The line, renamed Morristown & Erie after a merger in 1903, served paper mills and heavy industries until the 1970s when these core customers began to disappear as a result of a general downturn in manufacturing in the Northeast. The Morristown & Erie of today dates to 1982 when a local businessman, Benjamin Friedland, bought the railroad out of bankruptcy and launched an aggressive campaign to develop new customers.…

Cultivating a reading life

Cultivating a reading life

I learned to read perched on my grandmother’s knee. She was chair-bound, I was about four years old. I remember the shimmering scales on the book The Rainbow Fish and my nanna’s finger skating beneath each word as she read out loud. As a child, reading was at once a solitary journey — my first independent adventure — and an exercise in connection; a shared joy. This paradox remains just as true and thrilling today. This is not to say that my relationship with reading is an uncomplicated one. Very often, reading is not easy. It can be difficult to summon the concentration. I’m sucked into the vortex of my phone. Or I dip fretfully in and out of five books before landing, grateful, on something that feels right. My friends…

Lamborghini Countach That the Piedmontese word countach translates roughly to “holy shit!” tells you all you need to know about the impact of this quintessential Lamborghini. Unlike earlier supercars, whose sensuousness was often compared to reclining nudes, designer Marcello Gandini’s brutal masterwork looks more like a deadly weapon, a flying ax-head. This is the Countach’s legacy: It defined a level of outrageousness against which all future supercars would be judged. But the Countach itself is defined by its mechanical packaging. Mounting the radiators at the sides meant the nose could plunge to a honed edge. The huge, longitudinally oriented V-12 faced rearward, its transmission pointed toward the front, centralizing the car’s weight and pushing the passenger compartment forward, inverting the typical sports-car proportions. Also, in the post-Countach era, a supercar without…

Go with your flow

Annie Carter, host of the Yes You podcast, remembers her first inkling that there was something cyclical about her experiences: “I was feeling really stressed and really anxious one day and, as I was writing in my journal, I felt like I’d written this before. I looked back, and I found that about a month before that, I had felt the same. It was almost verbatim. That’s interesting, I thought. At that point, I didn’t realise that it had anything to do with my own cycle, but it twigged me to the fact that these things come and go,” she says. The first time I came across the idea of the infradian rhythm (versus or in addition to the circadian rhythm) and its impact on women’s energy levels, creativity, productivity, my…

GAY CONTENT EXCLUSIVE TO NETFLIX

Netflix leads the way with the long-awaited Ryan Murphy version of the Matt Crowley-stage play, one of the first “proper” gay films made and a leader in that field in 1970, The Boys in the Band. The Exorcist’s William Friedkin bravely directed this ground-breaking film stating: “Today’ is Harold’s Birthday…” posing a picture of a handsome young man next to him exclaiming: “and this is his present…” It was recently turned into a stage play in New York when it was revived, but was untimely halted due to the Covid pandemic. Now Murphy is giving his special elaborate, flamboyant and ultra-camp touch to this classic story of a group of over the top, but also serious gay men who get together for a party to end all parties. In the new version…

FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GREEN

Mental health has always been of great concern in the LGBTQ+ community and many of our members have suffered terribly from the isolation of often draconian lockdowns. Depression and suicide rates have gone up. As a coping mechanism, a great many have turned their homes into oases of green and have found solace in becoming plant parents. We care for ourselves by caring for plants. Having something to take care of makes us feel useful and not all of us have lovers or family, or even animal companions. And, if a plant dies, it’s no real biggy – just part of learning about the hobby. What might have started simply as an office plant brought home during lockdown, or a gift of the ever-ubiquitous moth orchid, many guys have been bitten…

Big Acts of Storytelling

IN 2013, WHEN I WAS A REPORTER FOR THE magazine Ad Age, I had occasion to interview David Granger, who at the time was three quarters of the way into his nineteen-year tenure as Esquire’s editor in chief. He characterized the feature stories on which Esquire built its reputation—deeply reported, vibrantly written, wholly immersive—as “big acts of storytelling.” The phrase has stuck with me, and today I use it frequently when talking about Esquire articles, past and present, because big acts of storytelling have been part of the magazine since its inception. Our first issue, published in September 1933, opened with a page called “Backstage with Esquire,” our take on the contributors’ page. The column contained a note about big-act storyteller Ernest Hemingway’s contribution: “For those of you who have waistlines,…

RESEARCH

Men, women show different interface with behavioral care November 6, 2020, OTAGO, New Zealand—Treatment patterns and use of national health services in New Zealand appear to differ between men and women with bipolar disorder, a new study suggests. Researchers found that the rates of people with bipolar in contact with specialist mental health services were 30 percent higher among women. In addition, women were more likely to receive only outpatient treatment and to have co-existing anxiety. Men had higher rates of co-existing substance use disorder and were more likely to be convicted of crimes when unwell, receive inpatient treatment, and receive compulsory treatment orders. The study, which appeared in the journal BJPsych Open, was entitled “Gender and mental health service use in bipolar disorder: National cohort study.” • Quality of life can predict mood states January 1,…

GEORGE DROUILLARD Hunter, Interpreter & Scout

NOWADAYS, THE AMERICAN FRONTIERSMAN IS highly romanticized and considered a hero of the highest order, a man who managed to spend his time prospecting, hunting or trapping when the wilderness was really wild. Many of us wish that we’d been born in that era, even picturing ourselves as that hearty soul who would have left everything he owned and made the dangerous trek out West to enjoy Mother Nature’s bounty before civilization overtook it. It’s likely that early mountain men, however, never really looked at themselves as heroes. They were just doing what their nature told them to do—heading for wide-open lands and reaping the rewards of the hard labor and difficult times they experienced out there. A first-class mountain man, hunter and trapper, George Drouillard was just such a hero. Young George Drouillard was…

The 8 Best Wireless Routers We’ve Tested

With COVID-19 still keeping so many people working from home, Wi-Fi routers are doing a lot more than streaming movies and games. Not only are home Wi-Fi routers keeping millions of people working, but they’re also connecting an ever-growing range of smart home devices. That means picking one that does the best job for you and fits your budget is trickier than ever, especially now that we’re seeing more Wi-Fi 6 devices becoming available. When you’re shopping for a new router, start by considering the size of your coverage area and the number of clients you need to support as well as the types of devices that you’ll be connecting. Not everybody needs the kind of performance that you get with the latest and greatest models, and there’s no reason to…

Technology Is Killing Me (and Probably You, Too)

Most days, I dream of chucking my iPhone 7 off a cliff. I imagine this $750 slab hurtling through the air, skipping across the surface of a turbulent ocean, and sinking deep, deep down into the murky depths. When that doesn’t work, I picture dropping it out a window and watching the screen shatter against the sidewalk, a thousand hairline cracks zigzagging across its glossy surface like lightning. Hi. I’m a millennial, and I’m suffering from an acute case of technological exhaustion. Surprising, I know. Millennials are supposed to be insufferable, selfie-snapping social media addicts who cry every time the Wi-Fi goes down. You know the type. Our noses are practically glued to our screens. We’d rather text than have a face-to-face conversation. According to the vast majority of millennial think…

Is Apple in Denial?

Is Apple in Denial?

It was the lack of ports that convinced me to stick with my four-year-old MacBook Air. At least the OS upgrades easily and seamlessly (not like Windows 10 on my Surface Pro). It was ludicrous to leave USB 3.0 out of the equation—hundreds of dollars in dongles would be useless. Plug in a dock? Ridiculous. Touch Bar instead of Touch Screen? Laughable. Maybe they will get it right in the future, but they seem to be stuck in a “form instead of function” mindset. —Firewallbill There are some things I like about macOS, such as apps that are single ZIP files without needing to install to registries or smear their files across the OS. I like the soft color palette they use. I think the underlining Unix OS renders graphics nicely. But…

OFF THE Leash The Ben Trovato Column

"Once the sun had reached an appropriate position in the sky, I wrangled myself into my wetsuit. The exertion was too much, and I had a little lie-down before getting into the car and driving to Point." My parents, girlfriends and one or two wives have all, at one time or another, accused me of being lazy. My defence that the sloth is my spirit animal carried very little weight. I would now like all of them to know that if it wasn't for my laziness – particularly on 14 July – I might not be here today. While I was lying under the duvet in my cosy Airbnb 100m from Lower Point in Jeffreys Bay, Jason Lammers was entering the gully at Point. Apparently, it was 'first light'; I don't even…

The Road to Nazaré

“It will be small, 10 to 15-foot ”, the message said. I looked at my phone again to make sure I wasn’t still asleep and dreaming, but there it was: a message from Twiggy inviting me to come surf Nazaré with him that Wednesday. Every part of me wanted to say no. I’d just arrived in Portugal after a summer of working as a surf instructor in the Mediterranean. I hadn’t surfed a wave over two foot in months. I had no equipment, never mind any real big wave surfing experience. But I knew this was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Before I knew it my bus ticket was booked, and after a few poor attempts at holding my breath in the hotel pool I decided that I’d just have to roll…

JUSTIN WILLIAMS CAN SEE THE FUTURE

THE INSTAGRAM POST WAS PROVOCATIVE, NO DOUBT. But also, Justin Williams is the kind of person who can’t resist the opportunity to talk a little shit. The caption on the photo posted by Criterium Nation announcing that sprinter Danny Estevez was joining Best Buddies Racing read: Williams, who cofounded the rival powerhouse team L39ION of Los Angeles in 2019 along with his youngest brother, Cory, hopped into the replies almost instantly: “It. Changes. Nothing.” Best Buddies rider Travis McCabe did not appreciate Williams’s audacity, and let it be known. What followed was a bizarrely specific thread 100 comments deep in which McCabe accused Williams of misrepresenting his achievements by wearing the Stars and Stripes jersey, and Williams accused McCabe of, essentially, whining about obscure distinctions that no one cares about, with fans joining…

GET A GREAT GUITAR SOUND

Once spurned by electronic musicians, the guitar has seen something of a rebirth over the last decade. It has shifted from being a symbol of rock’s ubiquitous dogma, to becoming a creative paintbrush with which kaleidoscopic new sounds have been weaved via the use of software effects and samples, while the once restrictive price tags of high-end amplification can now be replicated via a range of simulations. So, if you’re a traditionally equipped guitarist looking for new ways to explore your instrument with software, or even if you’ve never previously recorded, come along for a tour! A very brief history Across its many decades of life, the guitar has always been an instrument that its players have sought to wrangle new sounds from. The blues players of the Mississippi Delta back in…

The Japanese star has won everything there is to win — including back-to-back Olympic crowns — so what, you might ask, drives Hanyu to continue competing? When the COVID-19 pandemic became a reality in North America in mid-March and the 2020 World Champion-ships were cancelled, Yuzuru Hanyu returned to his Japanese homeland. As an asthmatic, he knew he would be at high risk if he caught the virus. In the months following his departure from Canada, there had been no information or updates about what he was doing, whether he was training, or if he intended to continue competing. The first news came just a week before the national championships in late December, when the line-ups were announced and Hanyu’s name was on the men’s roster. Though he chose not to compete at…

Figure skating is often the most solitary of pursuits. It was even more so for Keegan Messing in a season overwhelmed by the effects of a global pandemic. That feeling of separation is rather routine for Messing, but it was enhanced even further when COVID-19 tore through the 2020-2021 skating season. Messing, who trains in his home state of Alaska with long-time coach Ralph Burghart, was thousands of miles away from any of his Canadian teammates for more than a year. Keegan Messing’s arrival in Sweden came at the end of 24 hours of travel and three flights, which took him through Seattle, Washington and Amsterdam. But he was not complaining. Messing welcomed the opportunity to reunite with his friends and teammates in March at the World Championships in Stockholm. It had been so,…

Ice Capades

CHEF ASHLEY CHRISTENSEN and food writer Kaitlyn Goalen warmed up to their freezer big-time after collaborating on a cookbook for Poole’s, Christensen’s beloved Raleigh, North Carolina, diner. The couple ended up with a gold mine of extra goodies from recipe testing—think béchamel, compound butters, and meat and vegetable stocks. “We froze a lot of those leftovers and spent the next year using them up, which turned into a fun way to make our home cooking much more delicious,” says Goalen. In It’s Always Freezer Season (Ten Speed Press) they share their expertise, and the contents of their shelves. “It’s not all waffles and pints of ice cream,” says Christensen (though they do offer a mean sage-and-sausage-waffle recipe). One section of the book is devoted to savvy storage tips—we highlight a…

Embracing change

There are only a few sure things in life: birth, death and change. Change is a natural part of the human experience and yet something most of us are extremely resistant to. It’s said that the human race has survived this long due to our ability to adapt (change) to new circumstances, which begs the question … why are we so resistant to change? Life is in a constant state of flux. Consciousness itself is always evolving. While, at times, it may appear that things are linear by nature, in fact the path is twisty, windy and non-linear. It moves like a river, ebbing and flowing, all the while constantly evolving (aka changing). Change is a constant reality for us, whether we like it or not, but it’s often the most anxiety-inducing…

JEWEL OF ANCIENT JORDAN JERASH

JEWEL OF ANCIENT JORDAN JERASH

The Old Testament of the Bible describes the journey of the Israelites to the Promised Land. They needed to cross the kingdom of Edom, a land that straddled modern southern Israel and Jordan. The Israelites pleaded with the Edomites to “go by the King’s Highway until we have passed through your territory” (Num. 21:22). The existence of the King’s Highway can be traced back to the Bronze Age. This royal route was central to trade in the Middle East, connecting Egypt via the Gulf of Aqaba on the Red Sea all the way north to Damascus. No great empire was centered along this road, but the cities along it grew rich from commerce, as traders bearing grain from Egypt, incense from Yemen, pearls from the Red Sea, and spices from India…

THROUGH THE BASEMENT AND AROUND IT

THROUGH THE BASEMENT AND AROUND IT

A long-time interest in the transition-era Denver & Rio Grande Western (D&RGW), in both standard gauge and narrow gauge flavors, plus a large (if somewhat inconveniently arranged) space set the stage for this multi-deck track plan. My client – I’m a professional layout designer – had already commissioned two excellent custom plans for somewhat different spaces, but little could be salvaged from either of those for the new space that, while ample, was festooned with doors, posts, and other obstacles. Moreover, it included a number of oddly angled walls. Based on my client’s personal interest and those earlier design efforts, the primary elements to include were Pueblo Junction wye and yard, the famous Hanging Bridge scene near Cañon City, the busy narrow gauge/standard gauge terminal at Salida, and as far north…

ROBERT – A Queer And Crooked Memoir For The Not So Straight And Narrow Robert Hamblin | Melinda Ferguson Books | 9781928420972 | R280 Robert traverses a childhood peppered with a cast of unique and marginalised characters. At the centre is Billy, his flamboyantly queer conman father and the mysterious, seductive Alex. Robert’s childhood self is twisted in a confusing gender identity crisis. Being a girl just does not gel for him. Although Robert transitions from female to male, this is not a predictable trans story of someone trapped in the wrong body. Rather it is the tale of a human who refuses to live in a box and who questions the straight trajectory. Through excavating his past, Robert confronts and begins healing from racism and the confines of gender. AS FAR AS YOU’LL…

In search of new challenges

Change is coming once again to my basement, where my 1951 Santa Fe layout is slowly being dismantled and replaced with one depicting the mid-1950s Norfolk & Western in HO. Rather than repeat the two-week marathon demolition job that removed my Missouri, Kansas & Quincy to make room for the Santa Fe layout, this time I’m removing sections of the old layout only when needed to make room for the new. That way, I’ll always have an operational railroad available when I get the urge to run trains. I chose the N&W as the main prototype for several reasons. I’d never modeled an East Coast railroad, even though I grew up there and vividly remember the Pennsylvania RR and the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western. Several other candidates were also on my short…

BEST-LAID PLANS

IT’S TAKEN LUCID 13 years to get here, from a humble battery supplier to an American EV start-up that’s valued at roughly $39 billion before delivering a single customer car. It takes less than 10 seconds to realize it’s been worth the wait. That’s how long the 1111-hp Lucid Air Dream Edition Performance needs to crack the quarter-mile, specifically 9.9 seconds at 144 mph. Here in the Arizona desert, just a few hours from Lucid’s greenfield factory in Casa Grande, I content myself with lung-squeezing whomps to 120 mph in the time it takes many cars to hit 60. With the Air in its electron-huffing Sprint mode, I struggle to put the spatial dislocation into words. You know how you flick a stray ant off a picnic table? In the Lucid…

Step-by-step Edit images with Luminar Flex

1 Installation options If you’re starting from scratch, install Luminar Flex after you’ve finished installing your image-editing apps, so the plug-ins register correctly. During installation, you’ll be asked which apps are on your PC, so tick the boxes that apply. Once installed, you’ll see nothing has changed apart from a new shortcut on your desktop. You can still use Elements without opening Luminar. 2 Use as a standalone app Double-clicking that shortcut opens an app that looks like Luminar 3’s Edit mode. Luminar can be a bit baffling at first, as it doesn’t follow the conventions of image-editing apps, such as having a toolbar on the left. There are bars at the top, bottom and right, however, housing all you need to change your photos, including a layering system almost identical to that…

Wave of Pearls Bracelet

HERRINGBONE IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE bead-weaving stitches. I love the look, feel, and smooth flat profile. Herringbone is fairly versatile and creates a flexible finished design. Developing a herringbone pattern takes a bit of planning, but the stitch works up quickly once you get started. Increasing and decreasing in herringbone stitch is easy, as this project illustrates. The contrasting seed beads and pearls add a bit of elegance and interest to the simple band in this design. Whether you’re honing your herringbone skills or you’re just looking for a simple but sophisticated bracelet, this is a great project to try. I’ve stitched one for almost every outfit! “Pynten bringer erindringer og følelser frem”

Jette Frölich DESIGNER Q Hvordan kom du i gang med at arbejde med julepynt? – Jeg lavede julepynt som andre børn og elskede det. Min mormor lærte mig at brodere.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN

Before The Lord of the Rings and long before superheroes flooded the cinemas, there was another movie that ruled the fantasy genre. A violent epic of high adventure that was drenched in blood, this was the era when Conan the Barbarian was king. “Conan, what is best in life?” “To crush your enemies, see them driven before you and to hear the lamentation of their women!”—Conan In a savage age before history began, there is Conan of Cimmeria, a thief, reaver and slayer, seeking vengeance for his past and answers to the Riddle of Steel. By his side were an unlikely band of thieves and cutthroats. At his back were the snake cultists of Thulsa Doom who destroyed his people. Before him was a tale of high adventure and violent revenge—and a…

The final results were Sydney 60%, Montreal 36% and Houston 3%. InterPride announced Sydney’s win in Athens, Greece at their annual AGM. Sydney WorldPride will be held over February and March in 2023, to coincide with that year’s 45th anniversary Mardi Gras. This will be the first time ever WorldPride has come to the Southern Hemisphere and the Asia-Pacific region. Time travel and tipping points

It’s a warm winter’s morning and I’m standing in a bone-dry creek bed at the precipice of deep time. I’d rolled out of my tent early – dusty and tired and distinctly unshowered – to hike along Enorama Creek in the heart of the arid, ancient Flinders Ranges. Slivers of brittle rock slid beneath my boots as I descended the steep bank to find the only golden spike in the Southern Hemisphere – just five hours north of Adelaide, South Australia. The bronze-coloured disc is in the shade of a river red gum, embedded in the rock at the conspicuous divide between slabs of purple tillite and sandy dolomite. It’s engraved with the cryptic letters EDIACARAN – GSSP 2004, marking it as a Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point. Colloquially known as…

John Wesley Powell EXTREME EXPLORER ORER

John Wesley Powell, usually a man of cheerful disposition, was in a bad mood, perturbed. He had been traveling for weeks down the canyons of the Colorado River, bouncing among rocks and boulders, braving whirlpools and relentless heat, and naming the geographic features he encountered—for Powell was the first white man to see most of them, and certainly the first white man to travel the length of the untamed Colorado in a narrow-keeled boat. Now Powell and the members of his geographical survey party were in the heart of the Grand Canyon, beached at the point where a small, crystal-clear stream flowed into the river. He wrote in his journal on that day, August 16, 1869: “The Colorado is never a clear stream, but for the past three or four days…

SMOOTHBORE SHOOTOUT

SMOOTHBORE SHOOTOUT

SMOOTHBORES were the workhorse guns on the colonial American frontier. For warfare and for hunting they dominated the American firearms scene for most of the eighteenth century. But, as the frontier moved to the open spaces of the Great Plains in the 19th century, big-bore rifles, with their ability to accurately hit big game at long distances, became the standard guns of frontiersmen. For a time, smoothbore muskets maintained their pre-eminence on the battlefield because they had much higher rates of fire than slower-loading muzzle-loading rifles. But in 1849, the invention of the rifled musket, firing a Minié ball, erased that advantage. The Minié ball was an undersized, hollow-based bullet. Because it was undersized, it could be loaded as quickly as a smoothbore musket ball, but, upon firing, the hollow base expanded…

HOW TO USE SNAP LAYOUTS IN WINDOWS 11

HOW TO USE SNAP LAYOUTS IN WINDOWS 11

Windows 11 may be better known for its centered taskbar and rounded window borders, but the new Snap Layouts feature (sometimes also called Snap Assist) might be a more useful UI innovation. Windows, as its name implies, has long been excellent at managing and rearranging program windows, but Snap Layouts elevate the operating system (OS) to the next level. HOW DO SNAP LAYOUTS WORK? To get started with this new productivity tool, you simply hover the mouse over the Maximize icon in a program window’s upper-right corner. You’ll see a choice of layouts, like this: Note that not every application supports this feature. In my testing, the Firefox and Spotify programs showed only the old Maximize option. But you can still position them within a Snap Layout after starting the process with an…

The Best of CES 2018

The Best of CES 2018

Even after 51 years, CES still manages to pack some surprises. We’re not talking about the rain that caused crazy floods or the two-hour blackout in Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. We’re talking about 65-inch rollable OLED displays, robotic dogs, and $4,000 treadmills that deliver live workout classes on HD screens. There were plenty of less surprising, though no less welcome, innovations on display as well. We weren’t surprised to see voice assistance play a bigger role than ever this year, for instance. But we didn’t necessarily expect to see it embedded in the bathroom, where it can start your shower or turn on your toilet’s foot warmer. We’ve gathered our favorite 21 new products and technologies from the show. Although they aren’t all guaranteed to the make it…

When I was a little kid, my dad took me to a bookstore during a family holiday in the south-west of France. In the corner of the shop I found my first surf and bodyboard mag. Once it was opened, I couldn't close it! I showed one image to my dad and told him that one day, my photos would be in a surf magazine too. That same day, he bought me a bodyboard. Surf photography was my dream job, but growing up in the downtown of Paris, far from the ocean, in a modest situation, photography school and the equipment were way beyond my budget. Everything changed when the boom of the digital era arrived. I bought my first DSLR camera in 2007. It was a SIGMA SD9, like a…

Just don’t swim in front of him!” I was warned before I got into the water. “It makes him feel uncomfortable.” “Just I nodded emphatically, but thought to myself: I’m about to get in the water to photograph a three-ton, ocean-swimming elephant. How can I not get in his way? I first caught a glimpse of Rajan while watching The Fall, a beautiful fantasy film made in 2006. There’s an enduring scene in which a large elephant swims gracefully in blue, tropical waters; and as soon as I saw it, I was both fascinated and determined to find out where this elephant lived, and to photograph him in his environment. I eventually ended up tracking Rajan down to the small island of Havelock in India’s Andaman Island chain. I’d heard of the…

ALL TOGETHER NOW

It started with a surfboard. A custom Baron Stander thruster, that lifeguard Alvin Mtatshi ordered, paid for and gave to Ntando ‘Biggie’ Msibi, from Surfers Not Street Children. “I watched him surfing North and Dairy every day, ripping in the bowls, with his big surfboard,” says Alvin. “So I went to Baron and negotiated a good discount for the board. I was stoked to see him progress. The first air reverses he landed were on that board; and it was nice to see him going beyond, you know?” This impromptu act of kindness was a crucial turning point in the establishment of the Sisonke Surf Club. As Alvin explains: “I just wanted to see more people of colour in surf events at contests, surfing at a high level.” Today, Alvin Mtatshi is sitting in…

The Age of Plutonium

YUCCA FlLAT, Nevada, of the early 1950s is a diorama of modern America. Beneath desert stars a faux suburbia has been constructed, with ranch-style homes, utility poles, and pantries filled with canned food. Mannequins in floral dresses and mid-century suits tuck their plastic children into bed or sit before the silent televisions. Nearby, living soldiers crouch in a six-foot trench. Reporters assemble on pine benches dangerously close. An hour away, a woman in a revealing mushroom cloud costume is crowned Miss A-Bomb and an unknown musician named Elvis Presley, hoping for publicity, will soon perform as “the Nation’s only Atomic Powered Singer.” Guests carouse in glass lounges, drinking gin Atomic Cocktails. They’ll party until the bomb lights up the sky, and then they’ll kiss and dance and sing, drunk in…
